Rules Committee Hearing
January 8, 2019 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
Show Your Support for a Transparent Legislative Processes!
Testify or just help us create a show of support for the House Reform Caucus – a brave group of 20 legislators who are defying the status quo with 4 key reforms for the House rules bill.
House Leadership is cutting short the normal time for debate (usually 3 weeks) to rush through a Rules bill that not only LEAVES OUT these reforms, but ALSO consolidates even more power with the Speaker.
In fact, one of the reforms would eliniminate this cutting short of debate, by requiring 48 hours PUBLIC NOTICE for a vote on any bill, including sub-A’s (bills that have changed or had amendments added).
The other three reforms are equally important to ensure a fair and open legislative process:
- Require a 2/3 MAJORITY of members to suspend house rules (not just an agreement between the Speaker and the Minority Leader).
- Require a bill be allowed a vote on the floor if it has the support of a majority of Reps (like the Safe Schools Act and the Assault Weapon Ban).
- Allow bills to remain valid for the entire two-year term.
We are meeting at Room 101 at 4:30 (hearing is scheduled to begin at the Rise of the House, typically around 5pm).
Talking points will be available, should you wish to testify.
Street parking is generally easy around the State House at this time of day, and the employee parking lot across from the main entrance is open to the public at this time, as well. There is also paid parking at the Providence Place Mall, just a short walk away.
