The shooter in the Orlando nightclub affair in 2015 used 30-round magazines, according to the officials at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). These magazines provided the ability to shoot many rounds of bullets without having to reload.
This incident and other recent mass shootings involving high capacity magazines have lead to a change of opinion among many experts with regard to the best way to reduce the carnage mass killers can produce; forcing shooters to reload can create scenarios that can save lives, such as:
- Jamming of gun in a reload
- Creating time for people to get away
- Prompting bystanders to attempt to subdue the shooter
