RI Values Project Launches Campaign

Providence, RI – Two of Rhode Island’s leading advocacy organizations, Planned Parenthood Votes! RI and The Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence, are working together this election cycle to support the candidates and incumbents for state house races that share their values — and the values of the majority of Rhode Islanders.

Their campaign is known as: The RI Values Project. Both organizations have polling data that prove Rhode Islanders value protecting access to safe and legal abortion and birth control, as well as keeping guns out of schools and banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines. These two organizations also share with the majority of Rhode Islanders their support for fair pay for equal work, earned sick time and paid family leave, as well as a livable minimum wage.

“We are excited to have our two organizations joining together to help protect and fight for Rhode Island values by protecting our legislative champions and helping to elect newcomers that will be effective leaders on the issues we care about,” said Linda Finn, the CEO for the joint effort, and the President of the Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence. The group is campaigning to re-elect Senator Jeanine Calkin and State Representatives Marcia Ranglin-Vassell, Carol Hagan McEntee, Katie Kazarian, and Moira Walsh; and to elect newcomers Liana Cassar and Laufton Ascencao to the House of Representatives. “These incumbents and newcomers are being challenged by political insiders who could prevent good legislation from passing if they were elected,” continued Finn. “Our organizations fully support these candidates, and these candidates fully support the values we share with the majority of Rhode Islanders — protecting reproductive rights by passing the Reproductive Health Care Act, and passing sensible gun safety laws.”

The Democratic Primary Election on September 12 will determine the outcome of many elections and the RI Values Project encourages everyone to “vote as if your values depend on it!”
